Clifford Geertz (1926-2006) a été l’un des anthropologies les plus influents dans les dernières décennies du XXe siècle, même si certains parmi ses anciens étudiants (comme le soutient Rabinow in Slyomovics 2010) faisaient remarquer qu’en tant que individu il n’était pas particulièrement accessible, et que parfois il ne se préoccupait pas de ses étudiants. Un peu paradoxalement, son influence sur l’anthropologie et les disciplines proches continue à se faire sentir même après sa mort. Dans ce texte est analysé l’intérêt pour son travail dans les dix dernières années, comme un indice de la transformation d’un individu en un symbole culturel global.
