You Are Not of Human Kind: Emotional Vampirism in Nosferatu as a Reflection of "Vampiric" Romantic Relationships in Contemporary Culture

Nosferatu (2024), a film by Robert Eggers, may be regarded as an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s renowned Gothic novel Dracula. Framed through two fundamentally different cultural discourses of vampirism – Victorian horror and traditional Balkan beliefs – Nosferatu narrates the story of obsession between the Transylvanian vampire Count Orlok and the young, melancholic Ellen. The relationship established between these two characters is not conceived as a romantic saga of a woman and a gallant aristocratic vampire, but rather as a tragic narrative of emotional abuse between an empathetic victim and a man with narcissistic personality disorder – a dynamic examined in this paper as "emotional vampirism." Drawing upon ethnographic sources, the paper identifies Orlok as a vampire rooted in traditional Balkan conceptions of vampirism, subsequently directing the analysis toward a psychoanalytic perspective in order to explain the dynamics of emotional vampirism, also analyzed through romantic relationships in contemporary culture.
