Archéologie comme savoir sur les solutions alternatives. Démocratie athénienne et voisinage

Depuis le début de l’ère moderne, la démocratie a été l’une des valeurs sociales clés qui assure (devrait assurer) une représentation égale de tous les membres de la communauté dans la prise de décision politique. Les racines de ce mode d’organisation sociale sont explicitement associées au modèle antique, incarné dans l’organisation athénienne au Ve siècle AEC. Le savoir initial sur lequel reposait la compréhension moderne de la démocratie antique provenait presque exclusivement des sources écrites préservées. En revanche, l’organisation des communautés qui existaient en même temps plus profondément dans le continent européen, marquées par le terme de l’âge du fer, est négligée lorsqu’on considère le contexte plus large dans lequel la démocratie athénienne est née. Le savoir archéologique sur ces communautés, formé ces dernières décennies, témoigne d’une diversité de situations dépassant l’interprétation traditionnelle fondé sur le concept de chefferie. La mise de la démocratie athénienne dans le contexte de différentes solutions sociales réalisées simultanément dans son arrière-pays peut nous ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives sur les modes de son fonctionnement ainsi que sur toute la gamme des alternatives possibles. Enfin, cette observation comparative peut conduire à une meilleure compréhension de ressemblances et de différences entre le modèle antique de la démocratie et les formes modernes d’organisation désignées par le même terme.
