Clifford Geertz (1926-2006) je bio jedan od najuticajnijih antropologa u poslednjih nekoliko decenija XX veka, i pored toga što su neki njegovi nekadašnji studenti (kao što tvrdi Rabinow u Slyomovics 2010) isticali da kao ličnost baš i nije bio naročito dostupan, a ponekad da nije ni mario za svoje studente. Pomalo paradoksalno, njegov uticaj na antropologiju i srodne discipline ostao je prisutan i nakon smrti. U ovom tekstu se analizira interesovanje za njegov rad u poslednjih desetak godina, kao pokazatelj pretvaranja jedne ličnosti u globalni kulturni simbol.
