Apstrakt

Istorijski koreni etnologije i antropologije se u disciplinarnim okvirima najčešće sagledavaju kroz antičke, prosvetiteljske i moderne intelektualne tradicije Zapada. Premda je ovakvo stanovište delom opravdano (s obzirom na to da prati jasan kontinuitet u razvoju i scijentifikaciji discipline na zapadnim univerzitetima), ono možda i nehotice izostavlja intelektualne napore islamskih mislilaca i putopisaca koji su se, u svoje vreme, takođe susretali sa brojnim oblicima „kulturne drugosti“ i nastojali da ih predstave i interpretiraju vlastitoj čitalačkoj publici. Ovaj rad je usredsređen na Ibn Batutina višedecenijska putovanja kroz muslimanske zemlje – i izvan njih – i zamišljen je kao teorijski ogled koji ima za cilj da odgovori na pitanja kakav je značaj Ibn Batutinog putopisa ne samo za istorijske, već i za savremene aspekte naše discipline, odnosno u čemu se ogleda etnografska dimenzija Ibn Batutinih izveštaja o narodima i kulturama sa kojima je tokom svojih putovanja dolazio u dodir.
