Trois ans avant sa mort le 13 juillet 2013, George William Stocking, „le plus grand historien de l'anthropologie“ selon l'opinion générale dans la discipline, a écrit son autobiographie et ses mémoires intitulés Glimpses into My Own Black Box: An Exercise in Self-Deconstruction (2010). Le livre a été publié dans la célèbre édition History of Anthropology (HOA) que Stocking a lancée auprès de la maison d'édition de l'Université de Wisconsin à Maddison (1983) et en a été l’éditeur pendant deux décennies. L'objectif de ce travail est de rendre compte, à travers une analyse du contenu de l'œuvre-texte, de la stratégie textuelle, du procédé d'autohistorisation et d'autocritique de l'autobiographe et de l’anthropologue dans le contexte de son écriture de l'histoire de la discipline et du témoignage sur le habitus intellectuel, les milieux dans lesquels il s'est formé, a vécu et travaillé, ainsi que sur les changements idéologiques et intellectuels dans la communauté académique américaine depuis le milieu du XXe jusqu'au début du XXIe siècle.
